Combat mechanics refers to the way that combat is resolved when a unit attempts to hit another unit. A hit is resolved by determining:

  1. Whether the hit is successful
  2. How much damage is done
  3. Whether the hit has secondary effects

Note that in all combat calculations, the attacker's attack and damage is dependent on the ability or spell used; it might not be the attack or damage stat of the unit itself.

Chance to HitEdit

An attackers' chance to hit is determined by the difference between the attacker's attack and the defender's defense, which we will call the attacker's relative strength. All hits have at least a 10% chance of success called a critical hit and a 10% chance to failure called a critical miss.

Attacker's Relative Strength Chance to Hit
-4 or less 10%
-3 20%
-2 30%
-1 40%
0 50%
1 60%
2 70%
3 80%
4 or more 90%

For the mathematically inclined, the percentage chance to hit is given by the formula: (Attack - Defense + 5) * 10, where percentages lower than 10 are rounded to 10 and percentages higher than 90 are rounded to 90.

Resolving DamageEdit

Unsuccessful hits deal no damage. Critical hits deal the maximum damage of the ability or spell used. Non-critical successful hits deal a random amount of damage between the attacker's minimum and maximum damage inclusive. An attacker's minimum damage is typically one, but if the attacker's relative strength was 5 or greater, the attacker's minimum damage is increased. Mathematically, the attacker's minimum damage is the larger of 1 or (Attack - Defense - 3).

If the defender has resistance to the damage type of the attack, only half damage is dealt. If the defender has immunity to the damage type, no damage is dealt.

Damage EffectsEdit

If the hit dealt damage, there is a chance it will have secondary effects based on the damage type.

Expected DamageEdit

The expected damage per hit, taking into consideration the attacker's chance to hit, is given below. The rows are the attacker's relative strength and the columns are the attacker's damage. Note that due to special abilities, it is possible for stats to be larger than 10.
